Recently, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has launched a new policy proposal aimed at limiting students' use of mobile phones in class. The proposal was proposed by Rachel Chernos Lin, trustee of Don Valley West in District 11, and Sara Ehrhardt, trustee of Toronto-Danforth in District 15, and is currently being debated in the TDSB Governance and Policy Committee.

"What we are doing now is not working," Chernos Lin said on social media X. She hopes to develop a "powerful" new mobile phone policy in response to widespread concerns from parents and teachers about students using mobile phones during class time. She noted that if the motion is passed, the development of the new policy will involve extensive consultation and refer to best practices in other jurisdictions.

In 2007, the TDSB banned students from using mobile phones in school, but a few years later it reinstated the mobile phone regulations because some students could not use laptops to access the Internet. Five years ago, the Ontario Ministry of Education implemented a province-wide mobile phone policy aimed at limiting students' use of personal mobile devices during class time. However, Chernos Lin believes that the current policy is not clear enough and there is no comprehensive document to detail the issue. https://www.silencejammer.com

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce expressed support for reducing classroom distractions and welcomed the school board's further efforts on the basis of the provincial government. He stressed that the provincial government and school boards should act together to eliminate distractions in the classroom and allow students to refocus on reading, writing and math basics.
